What Will Decide The Scope Of Festive Spending This Year Mint Festive season is coming soon and for almost everyone festive season means increased spending. From the stock market to the retail market, everyone expects the consumer to shell out more money and buy. But what is the state of consumer right now? The average Indian consumer, the salaried middle class or even the upper class, the lower class, everybody. What is the state of the consumer right now? Will this festive season be a grand one in terms of money? Well, five factors essentially will determine how this festive season goes. Will there be spends? If there will be, how much? What will be the value and volume? And if not, what would be the reasons? Inflation is the number one. You see, as we speak, sugar prices have narrowed to 53 to 55 per kg, down from almost 76 rupees per kg about a month and a half ago. But food inflation, ladies and gentlemen, is still high. Retail onion prices in many cities have touched 70 rupees per kg. Costlier onions, higher cooking oil prices, a jump in the cost of pulses, vegetables and fruits. And by the time Diwali comes, nobody knows what the state of inflation will be. Overall food inflation rose to 5.95% in August from 5.52% in July, while headline consumer price inflation climbed to 4.82%. But the price pressure is not uniform across the grocery basket. Government data showed that onion prices, for instance, were up 48.27% to 7% yearonear in August almost 50%. Even as tomato prices fell 31.09%. Prices of milk, eggs, bread and daily edible items, a lot will depend on them. How will the shopping list go? Because these are the expenses which cannot be curtailed to a big extent. You need to eat. Therefore, everything depends on the kitchen basket. Number two is the MDR merchant discount rate. We all heard how India's UPI will move away from its zero MDR model for a limited set of merchant transactions from 15th of October this year. A4% merchant discount rate will apply to specified personto merchant UPI payments above 2,000 rupees while consumers will continue to make UPI payments without paying MDR. Now let me clarify this 15th of October the date is just before the sher starts. The sher is on 20th of October. After the sher there will be Dhanteras and then Diwali. Most of the merchants we spoke to said that UPI transaction volume and value will go down or the other option is the cash spending will go up or the prices of items will go up because MDR of 4% is likely to push up prices of high value items like jewelry, furniture or consumer goods for that matter as merchants will pass these costs to the consumers. The consumers eventually will bear the brunt of this 4%. Next on the list is cooking oil. Yes, everything is related to the kitchen, isn't it? The government on September 24th cut the basic customs duty on major edible oils, citing rising international prices and higher domestic landed costs. The duty on crude palm oil and crude soybean oil was reduced from 10 to 5% while crude sunflower oil saw the duty cut to zero. Duties on refined oils were also reduced. The government stated that the move aimed to moderate domestic prices and provide relief to consumers. That's the argument and it's likely to boost sentiment. Cooking oil is a major component of all our kitchens and the reduction in cost might likely provide more budget for other items. Next on the list is interest rate. Loans, credit card spending, buy now pay later volumes are increasing with stagnant salaries and moderate corporate growth. An increasing number of people are relying on loans. But it's expected that the RBI is likely to hike interest rates in the coming monetary policy meet considering inflation and other geopolitical factors. The cost of loans is therefore likely to be high. It's therefore expected that the volume of loans will go down but value of spins might go up. Last on the list is prices of gold, oil and of course the rupee. Needless to say, gold buying has been reduced over the last few years only to investments. Retail consumers who are either buying artificial jewelry have reduced their buying almost by 95%. Prices of gold which eventually depend on geopolitics as well will determine how this spending goes, how other spending goes. Same is the case with crude oil. Another important factor is the rupee valuation. In case the rupee goes down further, it will have a direct impact on inflation. So these are the top five factors ladies and gentlemen that will influence festive season spending if all the boxes are ticked lightly. Spending might reach our doorsteps as well. But if not we'll have to be prepared for a grim festive season. I along with my team shall see you on the next episode of Mint Explains. Until then, Shabbak.
